Another Stereotype of the Month entry:
From correspondent Cheryl:
This is an actual billboard at the intersection of Rt. 27 and Chapel Rd. in Carroll County, Maryland.
Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department's 13th Annual
Haunted Hayride
An Old Fashioned Haunted Hayride (like none you've ever been on before)
The four mile long hayride leaves from and returns to the Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department, 4224 Main Street in Lineboro, Maryland. You will ride in a large wagon pulled by a farm tractor along some of the darkest, spookiest and scariest parts of Lineboro. You will come across some of the most horrifying and grotesque scenes you have ever seen. Been there before you say? Well, not so fast. The Grim Reaper has been busy changing quiet and serene areas around Lineboro into evil and horrifying spaces. In order to see these newly discovered spectacles, you will ride farther than ever before. Of course, riding farther means you have to stay even more alert for ghosts and ghouls who are constantly on the prowl and whose only purpose is to SCARE YOU TO DEATH!!!
House of Horror
If you dare go into the House of Horror, you'll scream and shout, twist and turn your way through over 3200 square feet of bone chilling terror. Encountering spooks face to face or even feeling their presence will make you want to run to the nearest exit. But, walk, DO NOT run for you never know what may be lurking in the dark. Come and experience what spine-tingling chills and thrills await you inside every new room or around every dark turn.
The HOUSE OF HORROR is open rain or moonshine!

After receiving complaints, the fire department supposedly took down the sign and apologized. Cheryl adds:
Sir, I have seen this stuff all of my life growing up in Kansas and I was always hurt and angered by it.
Until I came across what you do I never had it dawn on me that I could make a difference.
Thank you for that. I respect you a great deal.
I realize it is a lot easier to sit and gripe or be hurt than to stand up and fight.
But I have never been one to do anything the easy way.
Thanks again for noticing this. I do hope these people are told how we do appreciate the correction.
I know I will be contacting them again..
Educate one at a time. We do make a difference.
Be Blessed,
Thank You Sir.

Rob's comment
Even if the billboard is no longer there, the point remains. When you want to present "the darkest, spookiest and scariest" places, with "horrifying and grotesque scenes," haunted by "ghosts and ghouls," what do you use? The Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department equated these things with murderous Indian savages.
