Voting Made Fun Again
Where to vote? Casinos, gyms, gun shops and more!
Kathy & Tony Peyser Sunday, September 28, 2003
The idea of a normal day of voting for this abnormal recall election makes no sense. The standard polling places — schools, libraries, churches, a neighbor's garage — are so last century. Here are our suggestions for some never-used but user-friendly locations for this historic gubernatorial vote.
If you're supporting Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, your polling place is at any Indian casino. The tribes hope a Bustamante win will pay off for them like a proverbial slot machine. These places shouldn't be too hard to find: our state's $5 billion-a-year gaming industry has 54 locations. If you get lost trying to find one, jump in your car and follow anyone with a "Cruz for Governor" bumper sticker. If you want a safe bet, that's it.
Rob's comment
Many Indians with no connection to gaming voted for Bustamante. They voted for him because he's a longtime supporter of Indian rights. He supported these rights before gaming was an issue—presumably because supporting people's rights is the right thing to do.
Non-Indians voted for Bustamante because they shared his views on a host of issues. The notion that everyone who backed Bustamante was a gaming Indian is flatly ridiculous.
