Stereotype of the Month Entry
(3/31/03)

Another Stereotype of the Month entry:

The gist of this comic strip is that Inuit people are dense or out of touch with modern reality. They can't decorate their igloos without making an obvious mistake.

For comparison's sake, imagine a Beverly Hills mansion with a refrigerator installed where the front door should be. Is that likely? No. Is it funny? No.

Why isn't it funny? Because we "know" rich American socialites wouldn't be stupid enough to install a refrigerator in the wrong place. Then why did Hilary Price think it would be funny to have some Inuit make a similar mistake? Because Price assumes the Inuit are different from, more primitive than, us. "We" wouldn't make such an obvious mistake, but "they" might.
