Stereotype of the Month Entry
(7/21/02)
Another Stereotype of the Month entry:
This cartoon indulges in the usual stereotypes: Plains tribe, teepee, chief, peace pipe. In addition, it has some specific problems:
- The chief normally isn't the tribal storyteller.
- Smoking a pipe has no relevance to most storytelling.
- That the chief is narrating a synopsis of The Beverly Hillbillies trivializes the act of storytelling. Most Native people told stories for religious or moral instruction under special conditions (e.g., only during winter).
- The Indians all have their hair in braids, another stereotype.
- Plains tribes generally didn't have pottery.
