Stereotype of the Month Entry
(5/17/02)

Another Stereotype of the Month entry:

As a correspondent helpfully pointed out, someone named "pika101_91776" auctioned the following Native American dolls on Yahoo:

Meet the Great Apache
http://page.auctions.shopping.yahoo.com/auction/65807025?aucview=0x14

Sweet Princess Rain
http://page.auctions.shopping.yahoo.com/auction/66085659?aucview=0x14

These auctions are no longer available on Yahoo, but you can read about the "Great Apache" doll at:

Great Apache Collectible American Indian Porcelain Doll

Needless to say, the "Great Apache" looks like a typical Plains Indian chief —one of the most common stereotypes. As for "Sweet Princess Rain," both the concept of an Indian princess and the "feminine" name "rain" are stereotypical.
