Stereotype of the Month Entry
(4/11/00)

Another Stereotype of the Month entry:

The one I hear still and it burns me is:

When your house is untidy, or your yard: "Jeez, it looks just like an Indian reservation!"

Diana Mitchell, in Victoria, BC

Rob's comment
A photograph of the Santa Clara reservation in New Mexico seems to belie the stereotype. It looks like a typical rural neighborhood to me.

From what I've seen, poor, rural neighborhoods—white or Indian—sometimes look unkempt. I figure it's because poor, rural neighborhoods often don't have regular garbage service or nearby junkyards. Or perhaps they're too preoccupied with basic survival to worry about a little untidiness. (That's my excuse, anyway.)

Would anyone else like to elaborate on Ms. Mitchell's comment?
