Al Carroll responded to my response to Ruel Macaraeg's website as a Stereotype of the Month entry:
My compliments. I'd say you tore him apart, figuratively. And that you were able to remain that calm doing it was amazing. As you can see, it's his amazingly bad writing and his infuriating habit of claiming "victory" is incredibly irritating.
A few things I can clear up, but that I don't think will be any cause for revisions.
1) My "harassing" him. That's comical. I've been debating him, that's all, and he's been losing pretty badly. About half a dozen people have raised the same objections with him that I have, including a now EX-friend and supporter of his named Federico. A few people on the Skeptic's Forum have complained about my "tone", in other words, my laughing at him and mocking him when he's made such huge mistakes as calling powwows "historical reenactments". I also made an effort to get the Dallas School District to fire him for his many bigotries, including getting hold of the local news media. Then a reporter wrote back to me that Ruel has never been a teacher in the district. So he's sweating because he knows his lies have been found out.
2) The RCC character is actually Ruel doing a very bad job of impersonating an Indian so he could vent at me. How do I know this? He was so clumsy at it, he answered questions to Ruel in the 1st person AS THE RCC CHARACTER. Plus "RCC" claimed to be native, but then made such clumsy mistakes as talking aobut "smoking peyote" and claiming he was Cherokee, but then refused to say his family name after I said I could ask Cherokee people from Oklahoma if they knew of his alleged family.
3) New Historicism is a school of thought among the history and literary criticism depts in the Ivy League, especially at Yale. It seeks to look at a historical event from every possible angle, especially literary references. But I doubt that's what he was referring to. It gets a lot of flak for being pretentious and long winded. He was making another personal attack, ie calling you a windbag.
4) The Yaomatchia crackpot Lozano ADMITTED to being a fraud and making it up based on what he learned in China. I could look it up for you if you want and are not sick of the whole thing.
And Ruel DID say Lozano was "enormously influential in how people view the Aztecs". Then he did his usual bit and refused to provide proof.
Thanks for all you've done. This is one more native who is very glad your site is out there and for all the good work you do, BTW.
I think with this, plus James Randi's saying he's had nothing to do with Macaraeg, Ruel will be forced to shut up after being so humiliated. And his chances of ever having any academic credibility are shot, for good.

Hi again Rob,
Here's the letter I promised to send earlier, as well as a follow up one from Randi as well.
I know you're sick of this by now, but take heart. It'll all be over for him around the middle of August. AFEDEX, the Filipino educators' group of Dallas, has vowed to seek his removal or disciplining. The local AIM chapter and supporters of Thunder Alliance are also being brought into this. The help of the local NAACP, LULAC, and even the Black Panthers are being sought.
He has written one more "rebuttal". Don't even bother answering, I want to take this one on. It's quite remarkable, because after his usual bluster and unsupported charges and claims of "victory" he starts to CONCEDE one point after another. Give yourself some credit, though if I were cynical (which I am) I'd also say his fear of losing his job has a lot to do with it.
Thanks for all your help and patience on this. I'm putting in links to your site on my own. I think you do some very good work at tearing apart stereotypes and I plan to use your site as a resource once I begin teaching over at ASU.

>> Macaraeg claims he has not only the support of yourself . . . <<
Not true. I never heard of him before.
>> . . . but of your foundation, the active guidance of anthropology professors within it. <<
Also untrue. And there are no "anthropology professors" in the Foundation.
>> He also claims to have personally talked to you over the phone . . . <<
He might have, but I don't remember. I speak to perhaps a hundred persons a week by phone.
>> . . . and that you were quite willing and eager to support his New Age ideas and "reasearch." <<
Not true. Again, I've never heard of the man before your e-mail message arrived.

Yes, I believe he did. I asked him if he were the one who claimed that he was in touch with anthropologists at the JREF, and he said that he'd not said that.
>> . . . and you were "quite enthusiastic" over his project and agreed to (yet again) help guide him along. <<
I only told him that we would accept his claim for testing, and that we accept ALL claims for testing, if they can be stated clearly and the form is filled out. I have no "enthusiasm" for this, it's just what I'm required to do. All the "guidance" I gave him was to tell him to fill out the form.
I have no interest in his political or ethical views. I am dismayed if it's true that he's a racist, etc., but that has no bearing on whether or not we would test his claim.
I do not support the man nor do I endorse his beliefs, he is assuming far more acceptance from me than I have ever expressed, and I am ONLY interested in testing his supernatural claim if he manages to properly state it.
Ruel getting desperate?
Rob,
Apparently the whole business has just taken some really ugly turns. On July 11, while I was away travelling, Macaraeg decided to post what he thought was my address online to encourage others to try to harass me or to try and intimidate me. This is in message 629.6 on the Skeptic's Forum at www.delphi.com/skepticsociety/messages.
Unfortunately, he posted my parents address, and I do not take kindly to seeing someone threaten very elderly and sickly members of my family. I have referred the matter to the local police and district attorney's office. I have also informed Macaraeg of my intention to seek both criminal and civil penalties against him should anyone harass or threaten my family. This whole episode is also being passed on to the other activist groups locally, NAACP, LULAC, and Thunder Alliance, as well as local media outlets. I doubt his school district will look kindly upon any possible criminal activity.
In addition, I have received four viruses in the past week. These have also been reported among a number of people active in American Indian causes. Whether Macaraeg or one of his New Age cohorts are responsible is not known, but it is being investigated by AIM people.
So watch yourself. This nut is getting pretty deranged and seems determined to lash out no matter what the consequences to himself.

Rob's reply
I should note that I haven't verified Al's claims any more than I've verified Ruel's. I verified the original stereotype and that's it. Please direct your e-mail to Al or Ruel if you have any questions.
But I've also received a few strange e-mails lately—stranger than usual, that is. A couple of anonymous requests to "Please look at this"—"this" being an unknown file. And an attempt to send me the Snow White/Seven Dwarfs virus.
Too bad I use both a nonstandard e-mail program and antivirus software. The anonymous files were converted to ASCII, I believe, and my antivirus program caught the virus before it reached my machine. Better luck next time, whoever.
More strange than these feeble (but illegal, Ruel) attempts to infect my machine are the messages I received from "Rhonda Love." She acted friendly and dissed Ruel—understandably. But then I got a message from Rhonda from Ruel's e-mail address.
Is "Rhonda" another fictitious identity? Does Ruel have a gender problem? Does he secretly hate himself and wish he were a woman? What would Freud say about someone who wants to disprove the potency of swords and other phallic substitutes?
I haven't heard from "Rhonda" since I asked her about her message from Ruel's address. Hmmm....
Watch out, Ruel. You appear to be headed for the unemployment line as well as shame and ignomy throughout the Internet. Don't end up in prison, too. You won't have a weapon—magic or otherwise—there.
Now might be a good time to wipe any incriminating evidence off your hard drive. I'm worried about you if you don't. When the police come to your door with a search warrant, which seems increasingly likely, they won't give you a second chance.
